An epic traverse of central Slovakia linking five climbs, long stretches of wilderness and the volcanic landscapes of Polana before finishing at Zbojska pass.
Starting in Brezno, this epic route crosses the wild heart of central Slovakia on a demanding sequence of five climbs and long, quiet stretches of mountain road. The first test comes almost immediately: a long ascent through the Kamenista Valley, where more than 20 kilometres of riding take you deep into Slovak wilderness with little to distract from the road and forested hills. The real highlight follows with the exceptionally tough climb towards Polana, one of Slovakia’s most distinctive mountain ranges, formed by volcanic activity. The gradient and length make this a serious effort, but the remote setting gives the climb a character that is difficult to find elsewhere. At the top, the mountain hotel is no longer operating, although the buffet still provides a useful stop for refreshments. From Detvianska Huta and Latky, the route returns to another extended stretch of largely uninterrupted countryside. A shorter climb towards Chorepa from Kokava nad Rimavicou then breaks up the journey before the final challenge. After passing the small town of Tisovec, the road turns upwards once more towards the Zbojska Pass. A traditional shepherd’s hut at the summit makes a fitting finish to a ride defined by mountains, forests and remarkably quiet roads. This is a route for riders who enjoy sustained climbing and remote landscapes more than fast kilometres or busy tourist roads.
